Describe the New York community.
Vlad: In the New York community there are two major courts, each consisting of various households with 50 to 60 apiece. Each of the courts has about 600 people. At anyone point in time, there are 1200 or 1500 in New York City.
Not only are you a vampire, you are a Gothic magician. What is Gothic Magic?
Vlad: My roots were in horror and classic films of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price. I wanted to interweave the mystique, suspense, and horror of the old movies with magic… instead of the typical “Pick a card… now it’s gone” routine. I wanted to make mini-vignettes where everything was theatrically framed within a storyline with the magic would unfold in the storyline. I use commentary and atmosphere from horror films and haunted attractions, including music from the gothic community. I also use historical characters such as Vlad the Impaler and the Countess Elizabeth Bathory and literature of Byron, Poe, and Shelly.
Where do you perform?
Vlad: All over. The farthest I’ve gone is up in Canada, up and down the East Coast. I haven’t been to the West coast too much. Everything in the range of banquet functions to private events like household parties to large-scale events. For instance, I actually was the magician invited by Clive Barker to perform the opening act for the VIP premier of “Lord of Illusions” at Webster Hall in New York City.
When did you know you were a vampire?
Vlad: I was in my mid-twenties, and I realized there was something different about me. I started to check into what was happening and researched mysticism and started to do explore accessing nighttime energy and a nocturnal life which made sense to me. Eventually I was asked to become part of the vampire community. I was a little leery at first because I didn’t want it to become a role-playing club. I wanted to make sure that it actually had a basis in reality – not a group of guys claiming they were 600 years old. My question is, “If you’re 600 years old why are you still living in your mom’s basement?”
